Thomas Valaoras, MD, founded Novant Health Valaoras & Lewis OB/GYN in 1998 with a simple goal, but one somewhat unique in medicine. "I did not set out to create a huge practice," Dr. Valaoras said. "Instead, I wanted to build a smaller, patient-centered practice where we could get to know our patients very well."
Over the years, that is exactly what Dr. Valaoras has done. "This is a small, intimate office," Dr. Valaoras said. "Dr. Lewis and our office staff are completely centered on delivering individual care and understanding not just our patients' medical needs, but their lives."
Dr. Valaoras enjoys being a part of women's lives and having a positive impact in them. "I truly enjoy taking care of people," he said, "and of course I also love delivering babies! Obstetrics and gynecology offers such variety. I can complete total laparoscopic hysterectomy surgery one morning, offer a Novasure or Essure procedure in the afternoon and then attend a delivery before my day is done. No two of my days are alike."
While work certainly keeps him busy, Dr. Valaoras makes the most of his time away from the office. He is married and has a son and daughter. "Together, we love getting outside," he shared. "We fish, camp, travel and play a lot of sports. When I get time alone, I love reading military history and doing projects in my workshop."
While his family background is Greek, Dr. Valaoras took an interest in another language and culture early in life. "I studied Spanish throughout school and studied abroad in Spain," he said. "I'm fluent in Spanish and enjoy practicing it with our Spanish-speaking patients."
